How to Setup Google Search Console

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool provided by Google that helps website owners monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot their site’s presence in Google Search results. Whether you’re a blogger, SEO specialist, or business owner, GSC is essential for tracking performance and optimizing your website.

Step 1: Set Up Google Search Console

1.1 Sign In to GSC

1.2 Add a Property

You can choose between:

  • Domain Property – Covers all subdomains and protocols (e.g., http, https)
  • URL Prefix Property – Tracks only the specific URL prefix

Recommendation: Use Domain Property for complete coverage.

1.3 Verify Ownership

To verify, choose one of these methods:

  • DNS Record (TXT) – Add a TXT record in your domain registrar’s DNS settings
  • HTML File Upload – Upload the verification file to your root domain
  • Meta Tag – Add the tag in the <head> section of your homepage
  • Google Analytics / Google Tag Manager – If already configured

Verification can take a few minutes to 24 hours.

Step 2: Understand the Dashboard

After verification, you’ll see the main dashboard that summarizes:

  • Performance (clicks, impressions)
  • Coverage (indexing status)
  • Experience (Core Web Vitals, Mobile Usability)
  • Enhancements (structured data, sitelinks, breadcrumbs, etc.)

Step 3: Use the Performance Report

Click on Performance in the left sidebar.

Key Metrics

  • Total Clicks – Number of times users clicked your website in Google Search
  • Total Impressions – Number of times your website appeared in search results
  • Average CTR – Click-through rate
  • Average Position – Average ranking of your website pages in search results

Filters to Apply

  • Queries (keywords)
  • Pages
  • Countries
  • Devices
  • Search Appearance (rich results, videos, etc.)
  • Date Range (compare time periods)

Use this data to optimize low-CTR, high-impression keywords.

Step 4: Inspect URLs with URL Inspection Tool

You can inspect how Google sees any specific URL on your site.

How to Use

  • Paste a page URL into the inspection bar at the top
  • You’ll learn:
    • Whether the page is indexed
    • Mobile usability
    • Coverage and enhancements status

If not indexed, click Request Indexing after fixing any issues.

Step 5: Monitor Page Indexing (Pages Report)

Under Indexing > Pages, track which of your pages are indexed or have errors.

Status Categories

  • Indexed – Successfully included in Google Search
  • Not Indexed – Pages with errors (e.g., 404, redirect loops)
  • Excluded – Pages intentionally excluded (e.g., noindex tag, canonical tag)

Regularly review and fix indexing issues to ensure important content is visible in search.

Step 6: Improve User Experience

Under Experience, monitor how users interact with your pages.

6.1 Core Web Vitals

Track metrics like:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)
  • FID (First Input Delay)
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

Aim for “Good” ratings on both mobile and desktop.

6.2 Mobile Usability

Ensure pages are mobile-friendly. Fix issues such as:

  • Clickable elements too close together
  • Content wider than screen
  • Text too small to read

Step 7: Check Enhancements

GSC detects structured data on your site and displays enhancement reports, such as:

  • Breadcrumbs
  • Products
  • FAQs
  • Review snippets
  • Videos
  • Logos

Fix any errors or warnings to improve your site’s eligibility for rich results.

Step 8: Monitor Manual Actions and Security Issues

These reports flag major issues that impact your visibility.

Manual Actions

  • Indicates penalties from Google (e.g., for unnatural links or spammy content)
  • Fix issues and request reconsideration

Security Issues

  • Shows malware infections, phishing attacks, or hacked pages
  • Must be resolved to maintain your ranking and user trust

Step 9: Submit Your Sitemap

Navigate to Indexing > Sitemaps.

  • Enter the URL of your sitemap (e.g., https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml)
  • Submitting helps Google discover your pages faster

Ensure the sitemap is clean and includes only indexable URLs.

Step 10: Remove Outdated or Sensitive Content

Use the Removals tool to:

  • Temporarily remove pages from search
  • Clear outdated snippets from Google’s cache

This does not permanently deindex the URL; use noindex or block via robots.txt for permanent removal.

Step 11: Review Internal and External Links

Under Links, monitor:

  • Top Linked Pages (External) – Which of your pages are being linked by others
  • Top Linking Sites – Who links to you
  • Top Linked Pages (Internal) – How you link internally

Use this to improve content promotion and internal navigation.

Step 12: Use Search Console Insights

Great for content creators and bloggers, this feature shows:

  • Page performance
  • Referring websites
  • Time on page
  • Top-performing queries
  • Social traffic sources

It’s an overview focused on individual page engagement and discovery trends.

Step 13: Integrate with Other Google Tools

For deeper insights:

  • Connect with Google Analytics 4 – Combine behavioral and performance data
  • Use in Google Looker Studio (Data Studio) – Create custom dashboards
  • API Access – For developers or advanced SEO tools

Final Tips for Using Google Search Console

  • Review GSC data weekly
  • Fix indexing and mobile usability issues promptly
  • Regularly update your sitemap
  • Use performance data to guide your SEO strategy
  • Keep an eye out for manual actions and security issues
